Our foundation courses offer an introduction to basic photography skills, concepts and equipment. Intended for the beginning photographer, these classes focus on developing the fundamental techniques necessary in using the camera and creating photographs.
All foundation workshops enable you to learn about traditional and digital photography via a series of 8 to 12 convenient evening classes, each 2– to 3–hours long, depending on the class in which you enroll.
Classes focused on darkroom techniques offer full access to NESOP's black and white darkrooms, color printing rooms and digital imaging lab (access to the digital imaging facility is restricted to students taking or who have taken other courses in our digital imaging classrooms or lab). Facilities are available to workshop students after 5 p.m., Monday–Friday and all day Saturday and Sunday. Access to these facilities is based on your workshop status and your compliance with the policies and procedures regarding use of our facilities.

[ Beginning Camera ]
This course provides basic skills, which the beginning photographer can immediately put to work to produce satisfying photographs. The class works with all camera functions such as focus, exposure, metering techniques and other basic operations. The instruction includes discussion, slides, black and white films, filters, flashes, lenses, close-up lenses and camera accessories. Although the course aims primarily to develop the technical skills of the beginning photographer, class work will encourage creativity in travel, still life, family portraiture, and nature photography.
[ Advanced Camera ]
This course builds on the foundation provided by Beginning Camera or the knowledge of basic camera skills. The Advanced Camera Workshop emphasizes improved photographic composition. Attention will be paid to improved technique in the following photographic fields: nature and wildlife, sports, studio lighting for still life, models and portraits, existing-light photography, night shots, and special effects. Students will produce presentations of their slide work for class discussion, and each student will be encouraged to discover the challenges of creative photography.

This eight-week course is designed to give students a strong foundation in understanding and using the functions of their digital cameras. Proper exposure (shutter speeds and aperture), white balance, different camera modes, lenses and focus, elementary flash and all basic digital camera functions will be covered. The course will also provide students with a rudimentary understanding of composition and framing in image-making. Differences between taking photos with film cameras and the digital method will be examined. Through weekly lectures, demonstrations and assignments, students will learn to prepare photos for e-mail, the internet and printing in photo labs or at home. Advanced Digital Camera is about making extraordinary photographs with the latest technology. Interactive classroom sessions as well as shooting and imaging assignments will lay the groundwork for a deeper understanding of the tools and techniques of digital photography. While this is not strictly a computer course, students will learn many digital processing techniques and how to apply them toward the ultimate goal of becoming a better photographer. This workshop builds upon the foundation laid out in Beginning Digital Camera.
Prerequisite: Beginning Digital Camera or a basic understanding of digital cameras and outside access to a computer running Adobe Photoshop or Photoshop Elements software.

This workshop presents the fundamentals of black & white photography and explores the basic functions of the camera. The class goal is to produce a high quality negative and technically strong black & white prints. Students receive weekly assignments to solve both technical and aesthetic problems. Ample darkroom time is made available for practical application of class lecture and demonstrations.

Making strong color prints in the traditional darkroom or the digital darkroom requires a solid understanding of color. This workshop allows students to acquire the fundamentals of color photography; most importantly, how to identify, correct and control color in image-making. This course emphasizes the production of prints from color negatives. Lectures include discussion of color theory, film and paper and fine color balance control. The C-41 and RA-4 color processes will be discussed. Critiques will take technical issues of the student’s color prints into consideration. This course is a prerequisite for the advanced color courses and is a complement to our digital arts workshops.
[ Business and Law for Photographers ]
This course provides an overview of copyright law and copyright registration. Various legal agreements, such as Gallery Agreements, Model Release and Property Release Agreements, Museum Agreements and Licensing Agreements will be discussed. Other issues will include work for hire, moral rights, integrity, protection of works on consignment, damage to photographs, infringement and remedies. Also included will be discussions on how to incorporate or LLC a new business.
