Foundation Photography Workshops

Our foundation courses offer an introduction to basic photography skills, concepts and equipment. Intended for the beginning photographer, these classes focus on developing the fundamental techniques necessary in using the camera and creating photographs.

All foundation workshops enable you to learn about traditional and digital photography via a series of 8 to 12 convenient evening classes, each 2– to 3–hours long, depending on the class in which you enroll.

Classes focused on darkroom techniques offer full access to NESOP's black and white darkrooms, color printing rooms and digital imaging lab (access to the digital imaging facility is restricted to students taking or who have taken other courses in our digital imaging classrooms or lab). Facilities are available to workshop students after 5 p.m., Monday–Friday and all day Saturday and Sunday. Access to these facilities is based on your workshop status and your compliance with the policies and procedures regarding use of our facilities.

Please note:  NESOP’s evening workshops do not fall under the scope of the school’s accreditation, and so they are not accredited by ACCSC.

Lectures include discussion of color theory, film and paper, and fine color balance control. The C-41 and RA-4 color processes will be discussed. After a brief review of fundamentals, students will dive in to more advanced techniques and camera controls, including: metering modes, exposure compensation, dynamic range, working with manual and TTL flash, and more. Lessons exploring the elements of composition, framing, use of color, editing and sequencing will allow students to unleash their creativity and begin to communicate more effectively with their photographs.
