Creative Imaging Arts

From capture to process and enhancement to output, our creative imaging arts courses take you through the full range of digital image making. Utilizing our modern digital classrooms and labs, students will learn the latest techniques to build a body of work for print, web and digital presentation.

Creative imaging workshops are small allowing for personal, hands-on instruction. Each workshop consists of 12 classes, each three hours long—one night a week for 12 weeks unless otherwise indicated. These workshops include both lecture and lab time. You will have access to the appropriate facilities—including the digital imaging classrooms, lab and scanning room, color printing rooms and black and white darkrooms. Digital images facilities are available to workshop students after 5 p.m., Monday–Friday. Weekend (Saturday–Sunday) access to the NESOP digital imaging facility can vary based on usage; for weekend hours, please call (617) 437-0149.  Access to these facilities is based on your workshop status and your compliance with the policies and procedures regarding use of our facilities.

Capturing the image is just the beginning! Take your images to the next level and make them look their best by entering the "digital darkroom" and using the processing capabilities of Adobe Lightroom. In this course students will be immersed in this powerful software, learning to use and customize Lightroom’s image organization system and working with the vast array of image development tools, allowing them to take complete control of processing and achieve the highest possible quality in their final images.

In addition to standard processing techniques, students will also learn black and white image conversion, toning and a variety of creative effects. Additional lessons include: printing images directly from Lightroom, including multiple image layouts and contact sheets with captions; making slideshows with sound and text; and creating galleries of images for the web. Using this single remarkable software, students will learn to organize, process and output their images in a completely new and efficient way.

Throughout the 12-week workshop, step by step instructions and hands-on exercises working with their own images and hard drives, will provide students with direct experience using this powerful software and allow them to unlock the true potential of their photographs.

Never before has the photographer had the amount of control available in today’s digital darkroom. This eight-week class builds upon the technical abilities of the digital darkroom and the critical eye for color and tone that students began developing in the Digital Printing workshop. Through a series of technical tests students will learn to understand the effects of different paper and ink combinations, custom sharpening effects, and different rendering intents. Problem solving when the profiles don’t produce expected results and getting the most out of your printer are both addressed in this workshop. In addition to using the standard printers throughout the course, each student will make one print on a 24-inch wide printer, learning resolution and proper sizing techniques for large format printing, as well as the effects of size on the image. Through class discussions students will identify their goals for the final image, and they will explore how the interaction of color, contrast and scale affect the impact of the final print. Ultimately, each student will begin to recognize their personal vision and express it through their custom prints.

Prerequisite: Digital Printing

Burning the Road: The Art of Composite Images at Your Fingertips

This one-day workshop will walk students through the entire process of creating a composite image in a sophisticated, "Hyper-Real" style--a graphic, saturated style used by photographers Gary Land, Joel Grimes and Tim Tadder.  The day will begin with a discussion of lighting, location, lens choice and other factors, followed by a studio shoot of a model and lighting demonstration for the shot. These elements are critical in creating a seamless final image. The afternoon will be dedicated to learning the post-production techniques effective in creating a successful composite. Throughout the day, students will have the opportunity to capture their own images and apply post-production techniques to their images.

Requirements: Students wishing to shoot should bring their DSLR cameras

Prerequisites:    Advanced course for photographers proficient in fundamental photographic and computer editing skills.

Offered:  Winter 2012 (February 25, 2012 from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.)

Final Cut Pro X for Photographers

This weekend workshop is designed to be an introduction to Final Cut Pro X (FCP X) for photographers.  FCP X, the new software release from Apple, offers a simpler and faster way to edit and produce videos from your DSLR.  Built on a new foundation, it provides a good way for photographers to move to the world of video.  The first day is broken down into a morning presentation of the software, followed in the afternoon by suggestions for effectively shooting video and time allowed for shooting video content.  The second day will be spent learning to edit the video--introducing titles and transitions, the insertion of an audio track and the process of converting the video for the web.  This workshop is an excellent introduction to the software and will provide photographers a strong foundation on which to build a set of skills, newly afforded by the integration of video into DSLRs.

Requirements:  DSLR camera capable of shooting video, a tripod, basic knowledge using Apple computers.

Prerequisites:  Advanced course for photographers proficient in working with computers and editing software.

Offered:  Winter 2012 (March 24-25, 2012 from 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM each day)
